If so, then cars must not have been selling well for the past 20 years since they offer the rebates all the time.

Why would SanDisk be offering Mftg.'s rebates for CF cards at Circuit City?

I happened to have the day off today and strolled into Circuit City. Circuit City is not a place I usually frequent and I don't like the shopping environment there for some reason. It must have something to do with the lighting or ceiling height or the corporate logo. It just doesn't connect with me.

Well, they have an impressive line-up of SanDisk products and they are also offering a rebate of $20.00 this week only on either the 32MB or 64MB SanDisk CF cards. The salesguy told me "It's a manufacturer's rebate. Why does that matter?" I replied I was just interested.

I believe it is the prerogative of the sales division to negotiate rebates with customers. I recall BestBuy giving away SanDisk CF cards with camera purchases just before Christmas. In any case, these are limited offers both in time and scope. I did not see similar offers at other local electronics dealers. I would guess these are standard practices used to reward good retail customers or to curry favor with stores who might consider dropping the product line.

BTW, Circuit City carries Centon brand CF and a wide variety of Memory Stick/Magic Gate cards. There is a variety of SmartDisk adapters as well sold under the Olympus, Sony and SanDisk brand name. They also carry SanDisk and Centon SmartMedia. The latest addition I have seen is a sleeker version of the CF type I and II USB ImageMate that sells in a plastic enclosure rather than a box for about $29.00. (I kind of liked the boxed model before.) I assume that ImageMate is a lost leader for SNDK. You don't really hear much about ImageMate sales contributing to quarterly revenues. Nonetheless, any SanDisk branded product is important. It is for this reason that I was a bit upset to see the SanDisk logo in ORANGE, not RED on the batch that was sent to Circuit City. Also, the type face was a bit smudgy and off-center. I guess the quality control guy was asleep at the wheel when these went by him on the assembly line. It kind of reminds me of that "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy is working at a chocolate factory. Not the kind of image you wish to project as a leader in the semiconductor industry. I am tempted to call SNDK marketing and complain about it.
