RE:"If it wasn't for the humidity, Houston would be a great place to live. The entertainment is great, and it is close to the Gulf. Housing is very affordable. For $500K you can buy a mansion. In Palo Alto, that gets you a beat up condo.

Northern California beaches are beautiful, but they are worthless when it comes to normal beach activities"

For the price of one of these Eichlers you can get a 3500 sq ft house here, near the beach...

Re: In Palo Alto, that gets you a beat up condo...

Some friends stopped by today who had just returned from visiting family in Palo Alto. They told me that many there are concerned about crime in neighboring communities that had recently had no such reputation (not in Palo Alto itself). They, (and I) were quite surprised to hear that.

Is there any validity to that (rather surprising) observation?

Saying that Houston is great except for the humidity is like saying Iceland or Toronto is great except for the Winter. Get real. I have lived in Houston, CA and Seattle. Most Texas women are great--but that is also true for California and you can ski in california.
