Looks good for Nokia's earnings....I believe that wireless is the largest user of DSP's.DSP market steps on gas, shatters estimates with 57% growth By Darrell Dunn Electronic Buyers' News (04/07/00, 12:52:59 PM EDT) TEMPE, Ariz. -- Led most significantly by the digital wireless-handset market, sales of digital signal processors are climbing faster than had initially been anticipated, according to market research firm Forward Concepts Co. Issuing revised data today to reflect the stronger-than-expected demand, the Tempe-based research house said that February's DSP shipments were up 57% over the same period a year ago. The figures were tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization -- which represents about 70 companies worldwide -- and indicate that DSP growth continues to outpace the overall semiconductor industry. "February was not a fluke, since January's 34.5% growth over January of 1999 was two times the growth of January 1999 over January 1998," said Will Strauss, analyst with Forward Concepts. Booming demand for the processors has caused Strauss to revise hisfive-year forecast for general-purpose programmable DSPs. Forward Concepts now expects the sector to generate sales of $6.1 billion in 2000, up from a previous estimate of $5.8 billion. That corresponds to 40% year-over-year growth, compared with earlier growth projections of 32%. Looking out to the 2004 market, Forward Concepts now believes DSP sales will increase to $19.2 billion, up from its earlier estimate of $18.1 billion. The compound annual growth rate for the market in the meantime was upped to 34.4% from the previous projection of 33%.
