Crazy Doug Re...<<I really doubt that thunderbird will remain competitive with the willamete. However, it will take willamete awhile to ramp up volume and speed, so thunderbird/mustang will probably be competitive for awhile.

Also, a real competitor isn't going to be formed overnight. If willamete is better than thunderbird there is probably relatively little AMD can do about it. >>>>>

Doug, I agree wholehearthedly with that statement, but I feel strongly that Willy will not be a real threat to Tbird until the ddr memory can be used; which according to Intel's roadmap won't happen until 2q-01. In addition; Willy needs new implementations of sse to really show its power; so Willy probably won't be much faster than Tbird on release. Thirdly, Ibm, Mo, and AMD have all announced their new high end processors would be multi processors on a chip, e.g. being power4. It seems to me Intel is being like Cray in the eighties and sticking with proven methods (aluminum and single chip); thereby getting passed by new methods (copper and multicores).

Also, a real competitor isn't going to be formed overnight. If willamete is better than thunderbird there is probably relatively little AMD can do about it. (They can do a process shrink, but how long do you think they can stay a whole process level ahead of intel?) They'll have to get back with a new core. Fortunately AMD has a new core coming out next year. I'm not sure whether I intend to stick around that long though.

doug,

To not be a flash in the pan, AMD needs to do better than what you have suggested........its really critical that the company perform in such a way that it doesn't fall behind Intel like it used to and that it doesn't lose investors like you or I. AMD needs to develop stability and ongoing credibility.

So I am hoping that they have all the bases covered when it comes to Willamette.
