<<What if Rodan, the giant prehistoric reptile flies in the path of the lightwave, won't that disrupt the
communications link?>>

One might assume that in the event Rodan would resurrect
from the dead...most wouldn't give a...about the path of light waves.
Me would be getting out of town, pronto. (g)

Re: Rodan- I can imagine a system that would have a buffer memory. Let's do the math-

what's the data rate? 2GB/sec?

Ok, how big is Rodan? Let's say 200 feet tall; with an average (circular) cross sectional area of 50 feet.

How fast does Rodan fly? Ok, ok- I know- he can hover. If he hovers, we are screwed. Let's say 100 miles per hour.

100 miles/hr * 5280 ft/mile * 1 hour/3600 sec = 146 feet per second. Let's call it 150 feet/sec.

Given Rodan's average cross section of 50ft, he's going to be in the beam
50 ft/ 150 ft/sec = 1/3 of a second.

Recall that our data rate is 2Gig/sec... we are going to need about 600 MB of onboard memory for the buffer. That's a lot.

YOU ARE RIGHT! If Rodan flys in to the beam, your data transmission is probably SCREWED! Of course, have you seen what he does to telephone wires and the electrical grid?

Working the numbers, you can see that things like birds in flight are not an issue. Birds nesting in front of your laser- yeah. Get a plastic owl. Hey wait, can I patent that? Laser Xmitters in housings shaped like owls? You read it here first. WebDrone Enterprises (Inc, registered trade mark) will sell the rights for one share of terrabeam.

Where I live, snow is what you have to watch out for. Rodan- well, you have to watch out for him, too.
