"i earn $150 marginal dollars to pay the $100 premium ($50 to uncle sam). the mortgage company turns around and has to pay tax on it, right?"

SB, you could make the same argument for any other goods or services that you buy. You have to pay with post tax dollars and the seller has to pay income tax on his profit. Why should the gov't encourage people to take on high LTV mortgages? It's just what this country needs right now, all of its real estate 97% mortgaged. Heck, I'm not even sure why the heck mortgage interest should be deductible. Now if you want to argue to get rid of the income tax, I'm all for that.
