Dear Tech: Do you know when whisper numbers started to become important factors in determining the market's reaction to earnings releases? Maybe my broker just never bothered to talk about whisper numbers with me in the pre-online broker and pre-Bitnet [predecessor of Internet] days. Come to think of it, I do not even recall people talking about whisper numbers on the various stock listserv lists I used to subscribe to or misc.invest.stocks when it first got started.

Today? It almost seems as if the whisper numbers are more important than the actual estimates. Assuming this is correct, I wonder if some (many?) corporations intentionally low-ball what they tell analysts.

BTW, Steve Milunovich is one sharp guy. I especially like his coverage of EMC and NTAP. He really seems to have a handle on the NAS and SAN markets.

Regards,

Lynn
