Lernout needs a grammar and parser for continuous dictation more than Nuance needs it for interactive transactions. Lernout is working on it, but for the moment speech recognition is pretty much a matter of pattern recognition at the lower levels, first phonemes themselves and then phoneme sequences.

To truly parse a sentence, picking out parts of speech and synthesizing "meaning", is a hard task that will occupy them for some time to come. It is essential for top-quality VR and for good quality translation. That is the artificial intelligence component of LHSP.

Lernout's offerings can reside on both desktops and servers. They compete against Nuance in the Far East, especially in Korea through their Bumil acquisition. I believe that Intel intends to use algorithms they have licensed from LHSP to implement server-based speech recognition.
