RNWK--RealNetworks Announces InterPacket to Deliver Broadband Internet Media Using RealSystem G2 Via Worldwide Satellite Network InterPacket Networks to Integrate RealSystem G2 Throughout its Broadcast Network and to Share Distribution Capacity with Real Broadcast Network
PR NEWSWIRE - April 10, 2000 09:01
LAS VEGAS, Apr 10, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in media delivery on the Internet, today announced that InterPacket Networks, Inc. will deploy RealNetworks award-winning, broadband-enabled RealSystem(R) G2 for transmission of Internet media over its international satellite broadcast edge delivery network. Content aggregators and content owners who have licensed a RealSystem G2 RealServer(R) to deliver broadcast quality streaming media through InterPacket's service will be able to reach a worldwide audience, without the need to add network hardware.

The combination of InterPacket's service and RealSystem G2 efficiently delivers media directly to the "edge" of the Internet, bypassing congestion points and sources of latency on the public Internet. This seamlessly integrated delivery system produces dramatic efficiencies in the economics of broadcasting by reducing the total bandwidth required to reach large-scale audiences. Additionally, end-users benefit from significant improvements in quality resulting from the more efficient and reliable delivery of Internet media. InterPacket and RealNetworks' Real Broadcast Network(TM) will share distribution networks, and will be able to seamlessly deliver content using each network system.

"InterPacket has taken advantage of the robust extensibility and powerful broadband capabilities of RealSystem G2 to create a sophisticated worldwide delivery system," said Martin Plaehn, senior vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "Combining RealNetworks' expertise in broadband Internet media delivery with the reliability of InterPacket's unique satellite transport service, is a win-win solution for audiences everywhere."

"Combining RealNetworks' highly scaleable media delivery system with InterPacket's satellite-based access provides an end-to-end streaming media system that delivers a reliable quality of service on a global basis," said Jon Gans, CEO of InterPacket. "Our integration will create a satellite delivery network that distributes rich streaming media with high quality of service and higher quality audio, video and rich media experience to large, dispersed audiences."
