Gates chose the right path while apple went the wrong way because they wanted to keep their O/S to themselves.

In MSFT for last hour rally today, yet another daytrade. Your charting skills were outstanding. I've learned to pay attention to charts, why, because there are a lot of people out there who buy when their chart indicators say to, therefore charting will work to some extent.

VG, I agree with you that Linux has only in the last year or so become ready for prime time. Still, the reason that IBM and others are able to economically pre-install the Linux software on systems prior to shipment is because of DOJ pressure. And I agree that Xerox failed to see the potential of their windows technology. The Xerox Lisa was a $15,000 machine that was too expensive even for the high end market it was targeted at. And, I agree that Jobs clearly blew it by pursuing a premium-price strategy. But, it was not a low priced strategy on the part of Gates that sealed Apple's fate. Apple's hardware was proprietary covered by patents. Unlike IBM, Apple succeeded in preventing a compatible market from developing. As a result, motherboards, floppy drives, hard drives, and memory for Apple systems ended up costing twice what they did in the IBM compatible marketplace. Apples success in preventing a compatible market from developing resulted in their systems costing twice as much as comparably equipped IBM clones. This allowed Microsoft to command higher prices for their software than they would have been able to command if a low cost IBM compatible marketplace had not developed. Just my opinion. Cheers.

Whoever is selling their stock today .. please stop.

Re: "Gates and his shareholders have been rewarded for recognising and exploiting the winning business strategy."

Brave! Excellent!

exploiting the winning business strategy...exploiting the winning business strategy...

This is what the British did with that South African gold that was idled in the ground for thousands of years -they developed a winning business strategy.

Keep saying it and maybe the DOJ will get it. There is nothing illegal about having, developing and using a winning strategy...in sports...in business...or in life!

MSFT is no Standard Oil. If they were telling UPS what to charge for delivery of Windows products then that would qualify what Standard Oil did to the railroads.

MSFT is no AT&T. If they were involved in not only charging for Windows products but for also doing and charging installation of Windows products and then charging a monthly fee to everyone who uses Windows products. Then had add on cost for time of use then that would qualify what AT&T did with the phone system nation wide and the obvious need to break that up.

The DOJ needs to stop catering to the pouting crybabies who cannot use their own winning business strategy. And they need to chase those money hungry carpetbagger AG's back to their spit licking states.
