No, I think last year the 3E marked a seasonal return to the sector - earlier than the usual September time. I think the calendar may have got distorted by the coming of the new 128 consoles. Perhaps, with this in full swing, the casualties will be among the front line game producers with the new down time intervals.

Yes, I feel for you on oil service companies. I got burnt the same way.

Darkreign2 first look

I always felt that the original Dark Reign did not receive the credit it deserved. Here was a game that had amazing game balance, computer AI and unit options. It simulated 3D with line of site and height adjustments and forced you to use strategy to win by making your facilities defenses very strong. You could not simply build a ton of units and hope to overwhelm your enemy. It was a beautiful thing, but it would forever fall under the shadow of Total Annihilation, which was released at the same time.

Pandemic did not let that get them down, and decided to come back with a vengeance. Thus the idea for Dark Reign II. Dark Reign II offers true 3D incorporating Intel's multi-resolution mesh technology that helps to keep game speeds high even with a large number of units on the screen. This is the same technology that will be used in Valve's highly anticipated Team Fortress 2. There will be night and day transitions and real physics applied to things like projectiles. It will also include an integrated map editor.

Dark Reign II is a prequal to the previous game. In this game you play either the low-tech Sprawlers or the Jovian Detention Authority. As with the original you will be able to set unit behavior (scout and flee, search and destroy, defend). This time your unit AI will automatically prioritize threats and react to that which is the most trouble. You will also be able to set and give commands to units of troops.

With this new 3D engine, hopefully Dark Reign II will be able to capture the kudos that the original game deserved and more. We have yet to see how easy it will be to manage battles from a 3D perspective with rotating camera angles and a large map. If they can pull it off, it should be impressive.
