What is too bad is that it looks like the Athlon's market penetration has stalled out at 84% whereas PIII is at 97%. It's critical for AMD to grab that 13% difference.

And it fits in to what I was saying earlier; that AMD is still in the process of gaining credibility. I wonder what %tage of the pc business is held by the small shops vis a vis the big retailers.

Thanks for the update.

ALL, Summary of ads by desktop PC vendors in the weekly "ComputorEdge"
publication for San Diego county. Percentages are weighted by the number
of locations of each vendor. Ads advertising only one system are excluded.

WHAT'S NEW: 900 MHz Athlon systems invaded SD County and one screwdriver shop
even has 1 GHz.
800 MHz is still the fastest Intel system, so AMD extended
its average "MHz lead" to the highest level yet, 95 MHz. Stastistics on
Athlon penetration may be skewed down this week because one dealer with 3
locations used most of their ad for parts this week.

At the low end, the K6-3 has all but disappeared and both K6-2 and Celeron
ads also dropped, the latter are now way below anything ever seen before.

NOTE: "AMD MHz" is defined as, for dealers advertising both AMD and Intel
systems, the MHZ of the fastest AMD system minus the MHz of the fastest Intel system.
This number can be positive or negative and is averaged over all dealers.
Intel fastest system is the percentage of locations
at which the highest
MHz system advertised uses an Intel CPU, which includes, of course, any ads which
only advertise Intel systems. The sum is not 100% because of ties.
