They don't want to reach out into the universe. At least when I think of the fundamentalists in my own family they seem to be deeply afraid of the universe, and are in fact, frightened of even parts of the United States- like California (a state chock full of sinners). The letters I get from the folks in my family are very very strange to me. They are matching up world events with the book of revelations. They make references to tribes of Israelites (with respect to different nationalities)- I think it's quaint, but then I remember THESE PEOPLE CAN VOTE. ARGH
