Craig, actually, the bubble memory did not die on performance, it died on price, the substrates where exotic GGG single crystals (Galium-Gadolinium-Garnet), if memory serves. Of course, in today's race for speed it did not have a fighting chance, but 25 years ago when it was "semi-launched", microseconds or more access time was quite "acceptable".

The funny thing is that about 10 years ago, when the "High Temperature Superconductors" arrived on the scene, they started reconsidering that material for Hi-TC substrates. Little did they know that high paramagnetism and superconductivity do not usually mix and match very well. (VBG).
