It will take long time for any fab to come online.

The Co fab is projected to be online by Oct/00.

Willamette ramp will be very slow. Intel has said it, analysts have said it and Mani has said it. :)

Do you believe everything Intel or the analysts say?

Mani <It will take long time for any fab to come online. Willamete has much larger die size than PIII. Intel needs a whole lot more than incremental fab capacity expansion to ramp the Willamette quickly.>

Another possible fab limitation for Willy may be Intel's decision to not license the new quad-pumped (?) bus. This would mean Intel would be producing all of the chipsets unless they contracted with another firm? And aren't most fabs busy and likely to become busier?

At present, Via seems to be contributing a substantial portion of these lower margin supporting chips. By building a "virtual gorilla" through working with other firms for supporting products AMD has the option to dedicate its fab space to the highest margin products based on market demands. As Via is left out of the Willie chipset business (or at least the quad-pumped bus) it should become more interested in supporting AMD's processors.

As the small shops and OEMS become more familiar with using AMD's products, and can see the benefit of having two real suppliers I think the need for AMD to offer MPUs at significantly lower prices relative to comparable Intel performance will diminish.
