Must disagree- the writings in many religions encourage violence. The old testament is full of God smiting entire cities (men, women and children) and urging his followers to join in the carnage. That's a bad God, imo. The Koran gives you a ticket to heaven for killing infidel. Not so good for us infidel.

And it's the organization. All organizations seek to suck in people from the outside, and almost all organizations are hostile, to a greater or lesser extent, to people on the "outside". People alone can't do much damage- people in groups I don't like. People in really BIG groups scare me.

It is a mistake to overemphasize ideological motivations in human conflict. Attila the Hun didn't rape, plunder, pillage, steal, and murder to impose an ideology, but because he came from a greedy, warlike people who thought might makes right. Greed, the lust for power, the streak of cruelty that makes children taunt the halt and lame: those are the real agents of deviltry. Sometimes, there is an ideological motive; usually, there is a rationalization to cover more primitive motivation. In any case, the net effect of concepts like the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man has been to limit the dreadful behavior of which man is capable, in my humble opinion. Studies show that those who hid and succored Holocaust survivors were mostly devout Christians acting from religious motives......
