What finished off Comunism was moral strength of the leaders of the West (Reagan, Thacher, Kohl, Mitterand (sp?) and majority of the citizens of these countries. Notice I say "majority", because there was a minority - a part of the Democratic party - that was ready to waive the white flag when the going got tough in the early 80s.

Joe,

You have got to be kidding...communism fell cause it ran out of money and its people were starving. Russia let the poles, the GDR, the czechs etc go because they could not afford to maintain a military presence in those countries any longer.

I think its the funniest thing in the world...when we were in school, we were told that its the West's resolve that would bring communism down and in reality it was the communist's screw ups that did the job.

Joe,

I lived behind the Iron curtain. I can tell you that it was nowhere near bankrupt.

My wife is from Russia. We met shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. I'm not sure when you left, but in the wake of Afghanistan the Soviet Union and it's military were bankrupt and demoralized.

The KGB had stolen most of the nations wealth, and collapse was all but inevitable. According to Gorbachev, Reagan's actions made the transition more difficult.
