Matt was right in saying that Linux was more suited for the consumer market, but the million dollar question is "is Linux more suited than VxWorks?".

Ask yourself a question, what good does a reliable OS do on a consumer appliance if the application keeps on crashing? In the case of web browsers and plug-ins, they crash much more often than Windows. From this point along, you can say that VxWorks' reliability advantage is pretty much negated.

On the feature side, Linux offers a world of applications that VxWorks can only dream of. There is the reason for the likes of Intel and AOL to choose Linux. Unless Java takes off, VxWorks will have a tough time in this potentially HUGE consumer appliances market.

Take this, a $300 stripped down Linux box with SVGA and NTSC/PAL outputs, plays DVD and surfs the Internet. What's WRS' competitive solution? None!
