Doug, Rumor has it that Gates derived his DOS from Gary Kildall's CP/M. Kildall's DOS became DR-DOS, and, yes, DR-DOS was always several steps ahead of the other DOSs. Kildall was a truly brilliant innovator, as opposed to Bill Gates being a truly innovative marketer. Among Microsoft's marketing strategies was to write software patches to Windows which rendered DR-DOS incompatible with Windows. Kildall wrote one of the the original GUIs, Gem Desktop (or something like that). Quarterdeck had the original multitasker with DESQview.

I believe the Lynx version for DOS should work in the Windows 3.1 environment. You might give that a try. Another option is to shop for an ISP that offers a "shell" account, although such is becoming rare. The shells use Lynx as their default browser, and the software is available from their server when you log on. Shell accounts offer Tin and Pine for newsreading which are the best and fastest newsreaders in existence. You will not, however, find happiness in Pico or the line text editor in the Lynx/Pine/Tin suite.

Me? I keep both Netscape and Lynx loaded. I browse in Lynx but fire up Netscape for posting and email.
