Actually the domino effect did happen, just not to anything close to the extent of the most paranoid of it supporters. Laos and Cambodia did go communist as well and both countries suffered greatly. Those who thought that the "domino effect" would cause Thailand to fall where wrong and those who thought it would spread over a huge chunk of the world were paranoid, so if you are limiting your use of paranoid to a relatively small number of people then you are correct.

The paranoia was over the "domino effect" that never materialized, even after we pulled out.

I think Cambodia and Laos did fall.
