He got lucky, and skated through it in one of the easiest jobs possible,

Then he got real lucky, got elected president, commander in chief and got shot.:)

A bit ironic, at the least.

Steven, You have too many "I'm sure" and "probably" statements in this post. That, really, means that you don't KNOW squat about what actually happened. ~H~

At least Reagan was much more up front that that damned draft dodger John Wayne who grew rich and famous pretending to be a fighting man. Any one who carries out the duty assigned to him has nothing to apologize for. Anyone who can find something in his service to brag about should get any acclaim he can earn. Reagan's distortions about his service usually arose from I imagine from his mental decay. and should I think be understood on that basis. I think everyone tends to exaggerate the past importance of his own life, at least in his day dreams. It must be unbearably tempting if one is president with no real personal achievements to make up great things that one accomplished to justify his pre-eminence. It is only fear of being exposed and an perhaps -- what's the word -- honesty? -- that prevents everyone from Walter Mitty moments.

This has been done to death elsewhere, but it appears not to have registered: in high school and college, Reagan was a very good student. He was not particularly reflective, but he was smart. When he was in the Army, he did not merely do voice overs, but was the officer in charge of personnel, and eventually the acting base commander. He was privy to early material relating to the Holocaust, and responsible for the setting of assignments to edit and otherwise handle such material........
