I'm with you dangergirl.

My name is Gary, and I ABUSE margin....
I learn so much from the insight on this thread. Just with I would stop getting greedy with margin. Now I am sweating tomorrow big-time. Don't let me miss the next MA meeting!

I enjoy the porch very much and learn from all of you. Thanks.
Miss you JW.

I need a margins` anonymous meeting bad.
If you pick the right stocks, and here and SI in general can help with that, you don't need margin. In a random situation margin will hurt (The market average generally rises about the same as margin interest so you get no gain).
Of course everyone knows that's not true if you are a great stock picker and timer. Margin is good when the stuff you buy goes up. BUT! unless you are D**M sure of your pick the deck is stacked against you, and if you are in margin all the time it's a guarenteed loser.

Step 1 - admit you have a problem.
Step 2 - Look at debt free as a higher power.

TP (Who ultra conservatively bought some BRCM on margin, only to find himself deeply in hole even though I was sure, no I KNEW! that I bought a bargain.)
