Hi Kemble! Re: zdnet.com I am looking forward to the Parmer tour. Can I bring my camera? This article is FYI.:)Leighcnbc.com 4/11/00 - IBM offers highest capacity notebook computer drives By Nicole Volpe NEW YORK, April 12 (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp. (IBM.N) on Wednesday unveiled the world's highest capacity notebook computer hard drives, which are tailored to store video and other multimedia files. The TravelStar 32GH holds five times as much data as the average notebook hard drive, IBM said. The 32-gigabyte drive holds up to eight DVD movies, 32,000 high-resolution digital photographs, or 49 music CDs. "Travelstar drives allow notebook users to carry unprecedented amounts of information, from business data to digital photographs, music and full-motion video," said Bill Healy, vice president of IBM's Storage Technology Division. The drives are the first notebook hard drives designed with specialized audio-visual capabilities. IBM researchers found a way to disable an "error correction" feature that regulates the transfer of text files that can interfere with video downloads, providing a smoother image. Two other new hard drives, the 20-gigabyte Travelstar 20GN, and the 30-gigabyte Travelstar 30GT, have the highest areal density, meaning more information can be stored in less disk space, making the drive more cost-effective to manufacture. "With the tremendous increase of the use of broadband, there is a large capacity required in storage to hold and manage those items effectively," said Gerry Purdy, president of Mobile Insights. IBM holds about 50 percent of the market for hard drives for notebook computers, followed by Toshiba Corp. (6502.T). "Toshiba is right on their tails," said Purdy. "Toshiba has done a really good job of matching capacity." The 32GH will be widely available in August, and the 20GN and 30GT hard drives will be shipped to Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ.N), Dell Computer Corp. (DELL.O), Gateway Inc. (GTW.N) and to IBM's own Personal Systems division. REUTERS Rtr 00:02 04-12-00
