Yes, gimp is attractive, as a matter of fact it is to me what makes linux attractive, however it is not as deep and wide as Photoshop. If you factor in plug-ins and ImageReady (which is an integrated compression tool) it lags even farther. To a graphics person speed is of the utmost, you would have a hard time watching me work. So $700 for a tool that saves hours off a graphics persons time (@ $50/hr minimum) makes a lot of sense over a years time.

Apples interface is also a time saver. Although Wintel machines are brutely faster, I routinely have 7 to 10 apps open at a time. Not only is it easier to switch back and forth on a Mac, Macs are easier to maintain if you use multiple apps.
