hal - thanks for an interesting and informative post. I think people confuse graphical interface with windowing interface. The grafting of graphical capability onto the Unix multiprocess environment was IMO a more successful "hybrid" than the attempt to make a single tasking system (DOS) look like a multi-tasking system. NT is much more analogous to the Unix model a true multi-tasking, multi-process OS which attaches windows to those processes. And "real programmers" in both the Unix and NT environments still do much of their work in the text-based mode - at least I do. It is just way more efficient for me to hammer out a command string to get my work done than to work through a bunch of menus and select boxes.

I wonder how many of the posters on this thread have used a MAC, and of those, how many understand the huge difference in presentation model and underlying architecture?
