Capabilities

WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ:WCII - news), a leading broadband services company, today announced a major multimedia initiative that provides business customers with a comprehensive suite of end-to-end multimedia product offerings and leverages Winstar's unique broadband network. As part of this ongoing effort, Winstar announced separate multi-year agreements with two of the leading companies involved in multimedia applications over the Internet -- iBEAM Broadcasting Corporation of Sunnyvale, CA, and MediaOnDemand.com of New York City.

``Our multimedia initiative is part of Winstar's commitment to make its broadband network even more useful for our customers and give them a total solution -- including Web and e-commerce design and development, hosting, ASP services, Internet access and multimedia services,' said Roger Pilc, vice president and general manager of Winstar Internet & Hosting Services. ``By using our broadband fixed-wireless technology to eliminate the last-mile bottleneck that often stifles the performance of multimedia services, our customers can enjoy, in a truly unique way, the promise of the Internet as a vehicle for delivering and receiving high-quality sound and video.'

MediaOnDemand.com will provide Winstar with streaming multimedia services -- including live-event production, design, development and encoding services -- as well as video switching and satellite transmission services. Winstar will provide MediaOnDemand.com with a wide range of broadband multimedia streaming delivery capabilities, collocation hosting services and Internet access. In addition, the MediaOnDemand.com agreement includes a $1 million investment by Winstar in MediaOnDemand.com.

The agreement with iBEAM Broadcasting© incorporates its edge distribution services into Winstar's portfolio of offerings by integrating iBEAM's MaxCaster(TM) media serving systems within the Winstar global broadband network. This high-fidelity streaming platform brings content to end-users, allowing large audiences to simultaneously experience video or audio streams on the Internet with viewing and listening quality that approaches television and radio.
