Re: Income taxes or counting FICA?

Yes, it's kind of interesting that Bill Gates, paying taxes primarily on long term capital gains has a percentage tax rate lower than does a single mother who is a successful waitress. The notion that social security is anything other than a dole is fantasy - but a fantasy that has the general population accept tax rates that would otherwise lead to riots in the streets.

Income taxes or counting FICA?

I think chic means income taxes. FICA is a separate system, where cost is shared by most, except of the poor, who get their FICA contributions refunded through Earned Income Tax Credit.

But the distribution is "progressive", that is it has some welfare element built in. However, most people are unaware of it. If the politicians try to remove the contribution cap, and turn it completely into a welfare program, they will end up killing the whole Social Security system.

Pat Moynihan, our retiring US senator from NY has been warning his Democratic collegues for long time about the danger of their attempt to turn Social Security into a welfare program. He says they are just playing into the hand of people who want to kill it. Moynihan believes in the Social Security, and wants it reformed in order to eliminate it's imminent insolvency.

Democrats are losing yet another voice of reason in Moynihan. They are trying to replace him with yet another clueless idiot - Hillary. (Just Hillary, because she doesn't want to be Rodham, or Clinton)
