BIS launches gold purity certification drive with WGC
Wednesday, April 12, 2000
NEW DELHI: Bureau of Indian Standards has launched a scheme in association with the World Gold Council (WGC) for hallmarking gold jewellery which will certify and guarantee the purity of gold.

Under the scheme, jewellers can apply for BIS certification which will be based on jewellers quality management system and test reports. The products will be marked with BIS logo along with caratage and gold quantity.

Formally launching the scheme here yesterday, Union minister for consumer affairs and public affairs Shanta Kumar said "the scheme will provide a strong impetus to the gold sector which is growing remarkably at present."

The corporate director (international marketing) of WGC, Kerr Cruishanks, said "Indian consumers will now be able to buy gold of assured quality." Predicting an upswing in Indian gold jewellery exports, Kerr said "the move will also see increased investments in large-scale gold jewellery manufacturing units leading to generation of employment opportunities for many of the talented karigars and young designers."

BIS has also approved five hallmarking and assaying centres which will follow international norms for sampling, assaying and hallmarking. The centres will have adequate testing facilities, trained and competent manpower, reports PTI.
