Lucent, TeraBeam to invest in fiberless optics

SEATTLE, April 12 - Lucent Technologies Inc. and TeraBeam Corp. said Wednesday they will form a venture to use TeraBeam's fiberless optical networking system that provides high-speed data networking between local and wide area networks.

Under the terms of the agreement, Lucent will invest $450 million in cash, research and development and products in the venture.

Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent will own 30 percent of the venture, to be called TeraBeam Internet Systems. TeraBeam, which will also contribute research and development and products, will own the remaining 70 percent.

Fiberless optical networking is one of the fastest growing segments of the Internet infrastructure market. The technology breaks what it is considered to be the last significant bottleneck in accessing the Internet or high-speed communications -- where data is slowed when it is carried between local and wide area networks, the companies said.
