Nortel Networks
(NT-$114 ¬-Cap $152B-Strong Buy)

Announces $500M Contract with Bell Atlantic/Vodafone

ú NT to provide end-to-end solution to Verizon Wireless (formed by combination of US wireless businesses of Bell Atlantic and Vodafone Airtouch) including CDMA infrastructure, optical transport and ATM switching; Verizon also plans to begin a second trial NT?s 3G technology in August.

ú Contract is part of Verizon?s planned more than $3B investment in 2000 to expand its footprint and increase capacity for wireless voice and data services.

ú View win as strategic for NT given Lucent?s position as primary vendor to Bell Atlantic Mobile (NT has existing relationship with Airtouch).

ú We believe shipments will begin in the current quarter (Q2:00) and will be front-end loaded over the two-year contract period;

Reiterate Strong Buy rating.
