You're right-I think expecting someone to pledge allegiance is a very different thing from respectfully standing for someone else's anthem. We stand at football games for other school's song! It's just polite. I was raised to just be polite. It's a way to make all the bumps between people a little smoother. Re: religion-- well that's kind of the point-- FOr Abdul-rauf-- he seems to have gotten confused that somehow being respectful to the country he was born in and that gave him the opportunity to be what he was meant he was taking away from his god. Maybe the Muslims have no equivalent for "Render unto Caesar"? Mostly I think he was just not a very clear thinker.
