Got the engine out of the racecar last night and tore it down. The apparent cause of the failure is that one of the studs for the 1st main cap had backed out. That explains everything; loss of power at speed, low oil pressure, and broken crank with accompanying radical block modification.

The guy I bought the car from built his own engines. I wrote him that I was going to sit down and have a beer or six and decide whether or not I'm going to just sell that car and get a different one, perhaps in a class less known for the kind of breakage at speed that is so popular with the spectators. He replied that he might be interested in buying it back. My reply: "How much?"

There was no Locktite on the backed out stud. Would think that'd be a good place for some. Also, it was backed out, not pulled out. The threads are beautiful.

About 4 or 5 of the valves are very visibly bent, and all of the pistons show impact marks. No pistons broke, though.

We'll see what happens. If he shoots me a high enough price, I'll sell it back to him. If not, I still might sell it to someone or get or build another engine.
