UPS announces computer leasing, purchase programs
Reuters Company News - April 12, 2000 17:31
ATLANTA, April 12 (Reuters) - United Parcel Service Inc. , the world's largest package delivery company, said on Wednesday it had teamed up with four leading U.S. computer manufacturers to provide its customers fast and cost-effective ways to buy or lease new personal computers.

Atlanta-based UPS said the new programme, dubbed UPS Online Advantage, would allow customers the hardware necessary to use the company's automated shipping software.

Compaq Computer Corp. , Dell Computer Corp. , Gateway Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. are UPS' partners in the programme.

UPS said computers provided under the programme would come with preloaded software, including UPS OnLine WorldShip, the company's automated shipping software.

UPS also announced on Wednesday a new financing programme, called Next Day Leasing, to help small businesses lease equipment such as copiers, office furniture and computers.

UPS Capital Corp., a subsidiary, will finance business equipment purchases up to $250,000.

"For nearly a century, UPS has been woven into the fabric of small business, serving as the vital link to their customers and suppliers," said Kim Marchner, the company's vice president of small business development.

Marchner said the two new programmes made UPS a "stronger ally than ever before."
