Pat and Frank (and anyone that cares about sewer cleaning in Paris), this is the response i received from SITA:

Att. Teddy xxxx.my name here.jr
As far as I know, these systems are used to clean only
circular sewers. The ball may be either of wood, either of iron.
a) the ball float on the water level and goes downwards, rolling on the top
generatrix of the sewer.
the effuents on the bottom are accelerated and the sediments disorganised and
pushed ahead.
b) the ball rolls on the bottom and disturb the sediments whicht start to lay on
the bottom of the sewer.
Energy come from the difference of level of water back and front the ball, and
from rhe venturi effect of restriction of section of effluent flow.
In theory, the movement of the ball may be almost continuous, but in fact, there
are lots of possible accidents ont the travel: Accelerations due to change of
the slope, curves, etc. and different obstacles due to the things which the ball
encounter in the flow.
I believe it is bettrer to be carefull. To get further and more precise
informations, you should ask the SIAAP, Syndicat Intercommunal d'Assainissement
de l'Agglom‚ration parisienne, owner of the networkof the area, and la Direction
des Services Techniques d'Assainissement de la Ville de Paris, who is the the
operator of the netwok for Paris.
I hope thes informations will help you.

I read the response a couple of times....
uh, i guess this is a wonderful example of the lack of relationship between "American English" and what everyone else speaks.

Does anyone have any idea what they were trying to say?????

thanks,

Teddy
