[Teligent Passes 'One Billion' Milestone, Announces Boston Properties Building Accord] VIENNA, Va., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Teligent, a global leader in broadband communications, today announced that it has secured rights to offer service to more than one billion square feet of commercial real estate, following the recent signing of a new building access agreement with Boston Properties. One of the nation's largest owners and developers of Class A office properties, Boston Properties has given Teligent the right to deliver broadband communications services to thousands of customers in 91 of Boston Properties' buildings in five leading markets across the country. The Boston Properties accord is the 8,472nd building access agreement in the Teligent portfolio, and with other recent contracts brings the total amount of commercial office space where the company can offer its local, long distance and high-speed Internet services to more than 1,070,000,000 square feet. ``This is a major milestone for Teligent,' said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex J. Mandl. ``With agreements in place covering more than a billion square feet of commercial real estate and more than 136,300 potential customers, we intend to move decisively to continue to expand our network reach and our customer base in all major markets.' ``Business tenants throughout the US are looking for ways to improve operations while reducing costs,' said Teligent Senior Vice President Bruce T. Wagner. ``With Teligent's SmartWave(TM) technology, we deliver the kind of competitive edge businesses are demanding. We're also contributing to Boston Properties' mission of creating opportunities for growth.' Under the Boston Properties agreement, Teligent will provide its high bandwidth services - local, long distance, high speed data and Internet access -- to small and medium-sized business tenants in Boston, New York City, Washington, DC, San Francisco and Princeton, New Jersey over its broadband SmartWave(TM) local networks. ``As we look ahead, we see telecommunications and broadband services as major factors in attracting and retaining high quality tenants for our office buildings,' said Boston Properties' Executive Vice President for Operations, Robert E. Burke. ``Through this agreement with Teligent, we will be able to provide the most advanced telecommunications technology to our tenants, add substantially to the value of our buildings, and generate additional revenue for Boston Properties.' About Teligent's broadband networks Teligent's local communications networks represent the integration of the latest advances in high-frequency microwave technology with traditional broadband wireline equipment. Together these technologies enable Teligent to increase its local network efficiency and significantly lower network costs. Teligent delivers fixed wireless services by installing small antennas on the roofs of customer buildings. When a customer makes a telephone call or accesses the Internet, the voice, data or video signals travel over the building's internal wiring to the rooftop antenna. These signals are then digitized and transmitted to a ``base station' antenna on another building, usually less than three miles away. Each base station antenna gathers signals from a cluster of surrounding customer buildings, aggregates the signals and then routes them to a broadband switching center. At the switching center, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches and data routers distribute the traffic to other networks, such as public circuit-switched voice networks, packet-switched Internet and private data networks.
