Your right Gary.

The phones were too cumbersome and the airtime was too expensive.

It's sad to think that they will de-orbit the birds.

Eric

Irridium's business plan also had intrinsic problems. The deployment and upgrade cycle of the birdie system was simply too long. The business was hatched at a time international long distances averaged $2-3 per minute in most parts of the world; so $3 air time was okay. By the time the system was in use however, international long distance was arbitraged by call-back operators down to 50 cents per minute. $3 air time charge looked like a dodo bird standing out in the big sky country. Irridium system did not have the bandwidth to carry enough phone calls to cut the charge down to competitive levels.
