I think celebrities have always had ego problems. Almost any adult who is consistently adored and fussed over is going to develop an ego problem; it's natural.

And I would agree that actors and celebrities who were sheltered are not necessarily to be blamed for it, unless of course they later made statements that suggested that they did things which they actually didn't do. Even that would not be entirely their fault: the studio publicity machines would inevitably do all they could to paint their boys as heroes, and actors have traditionally allowed themselves to believe what publicists say about them.

The profession is not known for close contact with reality.
