FTSE International to include Taiwan shares in its global index

Taipei, April 12, 2000 (CENS)--The London-based FTSE International is expected to announce on May 2 the inclusion of Taiwan shares into its FTSE World Index, sources at National Securities said Wednesday.

Weighting of Taiwan's will account for about 1% of the FTSE World Index at the initial stage, but is expected to boost to 2% in May next year, the sources quoted FTSE officials as saying.

FTSE officials unveiled the decision at a meeting held in conjunction with the opening of National Securities' first affiliate in Europe, sources at the securities house said.

The FTSE World Index will expand its weighting to include 17 other stock markets, including Taiwan, South Korea, and mainland China, in addition to its current weighting that covers 30 countries and 15 areas and regions.

Taiwan's weighting will be the 14th largest in the FTSE World Index, but will rank the third largest among Asian countries, behind only Japan and Hong Kong, the sources said.

However, only 50 to 100 stocks on the local bourse will be included in FTSE's Taiwan weighting, the sources noted.

Market analysts here predict that a sum of US$17.1 billion in new foreign equity funds from European countries will pour into the local bourse after the FTSE International adds Taiwan weighting into its global index.

Inflows of foreign equity funds totaled US$23.62 billion in March, of which remittances from European investors amounted to about US$7 billion-US$8 billion.

UMC Group sets development plan for next 10 years

Taipei, April 12, 2000 (CENS)--The United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) Group, the world's second largest provider of wafer foundry services, has drawn up a plan for its development over the next 10 years.

Robert Tsao, chairman of the group, indicated that the group will focus its business operation on wafer foundry services, production of sensor components, PCBs (printed circuit boards), and TFT-LCDs (thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays), as well as investing in network services and biotechnology industries for non-operating income.

The UMC Group is establishing a wafer foundry kingdom in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park, in Tainan County, southern Taiwan. The kingdom consists of five 12-inch wafer plants of the same architectural design and structure, with an investment of US$300 million each, for a total of US$1.5 billion.

To be installed with wafer foundry equipment in the third quarter of this year, the first plant will adopt a copper-wire manufacturing process based on 0.18-micron technology, with a monthly production capacity of 50,000 wafers. With technological improvement, expanded application of products, and use of new materials, the wafer foundry industry can prosper for more than 25 years, Tsao pointed out.

Apart from wafer foundry services, the group has grasped key technology items for making TFT-LCDs, PCBs, and sensor components. For example, Unipac Optoelectronics Corp., an affiliate of the group, is producing TFT-LCDs.

The UMC Group reaped revenue of NT$19.3 billion during the first quarter of this year and expects revenue of NT$88 billion in 2000.

"Chip fundamentals are startlingly good right now," says Boucher. "I was calling my clients advising them to start buying more chips."

During the second half of the year, you should see an epic shortage on the supply side," Boucher adds.

Fund manager David Alger agrees. These stocks are in "a sweet part of the cycle now," he says. Alger is seeing 30% to 100% annual earnings growth per year in these companies
