I avoid software geeks like the plague, but I couldn't live the way I do without their work, and I have to say that in a free market they deserve their money. I think the syndrome you speak of exists anywhere people get very rich very young: you see a great deal of it in Manhattan, among young people who have made quick bucks in derivatives trading, currency arbitrage, and other even less respectable means.

On the whole, I think I prefer the software geeks. Obnoxious though they may be, at least they're creating something that's improving the quality of life for a lot of people. I'm not so sure that's true of the Wall Street wonderkids.
