Bertelsmann Media Systems Bases Information Infrastructure On EMC To Keep Pace With Explosive E-Business Growth
European IT Heavyweight Relies on EMC Enterprise Storage Network to Provide the Highest Level of Service Availability and Infrastructure Scalability
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 13, 2000-- EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today announced that Bertelsmann mediaSystems (BmS), the information technology service provider for the Bertlesmann group of companies and a leading European IT-service provider for the media industry, has developed a comprehensive IT infrastructure based on EMC's Enterprise Storage Network (ESN).

Due to the continuing evolution of the Internet and customers' explosive demand for its full-service e-business solutions, BmS implemented EMC's ESN to allow it to scale its infrastructure without restriction, provide rapid time-to-market of new, cutting-edge services and provide superior levels of service availability.

Dr. Thorsten Demel, Executive Vice President of Bertelsmann mediaSystems said, ``In our Internet business, continuous availability around the clock is of crucial importance. That is why we rely on EMC's hardware and software solutions for storing, managing and protecting our customers' business-critical information. EMC is a reliable partner who provides both the highest level of performance and best-of-breed technologies.'

With EMC at the core of its infrastructure, Bertelsmann mediaSystems developed an e-commerce platform for Bertelsmann Online. EMC's solutions consolidate and integrate Bertelsmann Online's entire server environment, while protecting, managing and sharing the data residing on those servers. EMC provides Bertelsmann Online with one common infrastructure that's flexible enough to support its diverse server environment and scale easily to manage the mammoth increases in online information.

Continuous Availability and Centralized Data Management

To ensure continuous service availability, Bertelsmann mediaSystems has consolidated its customers' data on an EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN). BmS has installed 50 EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems, as well as multiple EMC Connectrix systems to integrate and connect all of its servers within the framework of the ESN. BmS relies on EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) software to provide instantaneous copies of data residing on the storage systems located at both primary and remote secondary sites to ensure the seamless continuation of business processes. EMC TimeFinder software allows BmS to carry out online backups without having to interrupt production applications.

The company also uses EMC ControlCenter software for enterprise-wide and efficient management of its data, which allows BmS to view and administer all data from a centralized console.

``Understanding their competitors are just a click away, BmS needed to ensure that their services are continuously available and accessible,' said Mike Ruffolo, EMC's Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. ``Without the reliability and flexibility of EMC's solutions, BmS could not provide the level of service now required to compete and lead markets in the new economy.'
