and since we're seeing "unbiased" benchmarks such as the ones in PC Magazine and PC World

Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples when interpreting the data from these comparisons. Faster CPUs will generally produce higher benchmark scores than slower CPUs, regardless of other system issues.

Some very astute remarks from you, indication your deep understanding of the topic:

Pompsander and I had many public discussions last year on the need for the positive PR/benchmarks that we're now seeing. Now that those are showing up and convincingly putting PIII/RDRAM in the lead, the last piece of the puzzle that needs to drop into place is to get the price down. And that may be happening; I believe that Dell has reduced again the price of RDRAM -- I was pricing some Dell systems last night and I think the small business B series models are now back to $380 to upgrade from 128M to 256M.
