Time is money. Lost work is money.

Since our prices are based on how many hours we work, Microsoft technology has made me earn much more money, since it takes many more hours to work with... It works just like Oracle software and Cisco routers, whereas plug-and-play stuff, that doesn't need configuration, doesn't give me much income.

If you think that the best product for the customer is the one that wins the market, you're wrong. If a product needs to succeed, every single part of the sales channel needs to earn money on selling the product. Since Windows licenses only give up to 15%, it's not the licenses that makes you rich, but all the consulting hours that follow.

The problem for Microsoft is, that with Linux, this same mechanism applies. This makes it easy to deliver Linux solutions to customers and earn big money on it.

I've just done a calculation on an administrative, Windows based database solution for a customer. If we wait 6 months until Corel's Kylix product comes out, we can remove all Microsoft licenses from the budget, add more consulting hours, earn more money and still be 30% cheaper than the Microsoft based solution. And it will be much more stable.
