<Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), a worldwide leader in code division multiple access (CDMA) 450, will co-operate with Westel Radiotelephon Ltd and QUALCOMM to trial CDMA 450 technology beginning September 2000 in Budapest, Hungary.

The first phase of the trial will provide coverage throughout Budapest with up to 100 mobiles active on the system. The first aspect of the trial will focus on RF optimisation as well as maximising coverage and taking advantage of 450 MHz propagation. The second phase of the trial will consist of pre-commercial market testing of subscriber features and services, including packet data and mobile Internet. The main objectives of the trial are to test the anticipated benefits that 3G CDMA technology can offer both the operator and the subscriber. The trial on Westel's network will be supported by infrastructure equipment and services from Lucent and non-commercial, prototype handsets by QUALCOMM. The handsets were built at QUALCOMM's facility in the United Kingdom by the R&D group that QUALCOMM acquired from TELLIT in February 2000.

David M. Poticny, Vice President Global Wireless Strategy, Lucent Technologies said; "Lucent is a strong believer in customer choice, and we encourage wireless operators worldwide to evaluate all available technologies on their merit...

This looks like the first significant incursion into Europe by CDMA [other than Globalstar] in mobile. Note it is aiming at 3G characteristics too! This is more than the Newbury trials of 1998 which were not in the slightest pre-commercial. This is threatening to roll out into the 450MHz spectrum in Budapest as a real system. I dare say it has good prospects of success.

Nokia has got CDMA coming closer to home and NOT in the W-CDMA form. Still, it's not until late this year that it will start, so it's nothing major really. Just another CDMA straw on the GSM Camel's back.

Patricia Ireland? now.org I don't think she'd be upset with me. After all, I'm firmly of the view that most women should be treated as human. Why, some of my best friends are women. Heck, even my mother was a woman and, I should add, a firm believer of women doing what they like [not a drippy feminist of the wimpy, self-serving, modern kind], while Patricia was still worrying about her first pimples. Even my three daughters are women and I'm definitely in favour of them doing what they like [that way I don't have the embarrassment of being ignored - they are adults after all]. Some of us have wives who express some individual thinking too, despite the best training programmes. Yes, women should definitely be included in 'human' genotype, phenotype or whatever those DNA things are - maybe chromosomic type.

Now, men on the other hand! While some of my best friends are men, I would be reluctant to include too many in the classification 'human'. HomoSapiensSapiens maybe, but they are simply too furry and odiferous to make it all the way to 'human'. Check out any 'male-only' zone [say a men-only sauna and compare it with a women-only one] to see what I mean. I think men should be given compensation because of DNA disability. How would women like to cope with loads of testosterone mucking up their thinking process all day?

Anyway, I don't want to offend Charlene and Patricia from Ireland, because I know how violent those Irish are!! Charlene will announce a total trade ban on the southern hemisphere if I push my luck! Madeleine will... well, I better just shut up...

Can't we all just be friends and love each other?

Maurice

PS: What about the idea of being in favour of customer choice. That's like being in favour of gravity and shows a peculiar mode of thinking.
