Jim,

I understand what you are saying but consider this...

RAMBUS is like a toll booth with a heavy toll.
People have a habit of driving around toll booths if they don't have to go too far out of their way.
RAMBUS wants to have the only road or at least place a toll on the other one.
If RAMBUS doesn't collect the toll, all the work they have done in the last 10 years means little...
People may just take the other road...

I like your analogy.

Yes, Rambus would like to get paid if you use their road. That's not an evil thing. The heaviness of the toll, however, is debatable. I believe that their percentage is not out of line, but there are many others far more qualified than myself who can speak about that.

Do they want to have the only road? Probably, wouldn't every company? (When I was at Oracle, the catch phrase for any targeted competitor at the moment was that we were "going to shut off the oxygen" to them). But if a competitive road doesn't use any part of Rambus's road, there's nothing Rambus can do. C'est la vie. If it does use Rambus's road, then Rambus deserves to get paid.

Dave

p.s. Most (99.999%?) of the population pays at a toll booth and doesn't go around. Most people understand the need to pay for services and products you use.
