I think domestic animals like dogs and cats are very socialized, and want harmony, just like humans do. Some dogs are very maternal, and will "mother" other species. My mother is always cutting out pictures from tabloids of dogs "mothering" some other species, usually kittens. Two of my cats get along with the dog, and bump up against her like they do against the humans, two don't.
