Tejek (Ted),

You had better go back and get a book on basic investing. You borrow the shares from your broker to sell them to someone. That is what creates the short position. When you buy them back it is so that you can return the shares that you borrowed back to the broker. You don't get to keep them!!

ted,

e-analytics.com

You borrow the stock and sell it.

Then later you buy it back and give it back to your broker.

You hope the price went down between the sell and buy time period.

When you buy back the shares you give them to your broker to turn over to the person you sold the shares to in the first place, you don't get to keep the shares. If you did, I'd short everything, take the money, then still own the shares at the end ;)
