Good morning Doc,

It sounds like the 'Air Combat' operation is very professional and that you got your money's worth. I am sorry you got caught short in the margin game. I was telling my wife that this market crash - just before my retirement - may have been the best thing to happen to me (I know it is certainly not the best thing for others) because it will make me think twice before sticking my neck out with margined buys.

The guys who flew the Thud and survived think it was a great machine. Republic (like Grumman) has always made solid, heavy, airplanes that could take a licking and keep on ticking - the P-47 Jug, was the first, followed by all the F-84 variants. Unfortunately, they usually couldn't find an engine big enough to make them perform up to expectations. Hence the nick-names attached to them. The straight winged f-84 was the groundhog, the bent-wing F-84 was the super-groundhog, and Republic posted an article in Aviation Week and said the F-105 would not be known as the Ultra-hog. It was said that if the Air Force built a runway all the way around the world, Republic would build an airplane that would use it all.

Republic and Grumman are located on opposite ends of Long Island and are collectively known as the 'Long Island Anvil Works.' They say that Congress had to keep awarding them both big contracts because if one went bankrupt and had to liquidate, it would cause the Island to tip up and sink.

Hope your fortunes turn around and you get a chance to strap that SU-27 to your az. I saw it fly at the National Air Show in Oklahoma City - the 'Cobra' maneuver was awesome. I thought the guy had killed himself, but it flew right through it.

Better get off and check the market.

Best of luck
Sting
