You are absolutely right. Just pay the IRS what is due to them. Sleep well at night.

.....and remember how lucky you are to live in the land of cheap taxes. Remember that your neighbours to the north have a capital gains rate of about 33.3%, don't have a long term capital gains rate, and risk having to report gains as income (rather than capital gains) if we do too much trading, and then we pay 50% or more.
