If Wolfowitz is anything like Richard Perle, the defense contractors should be very pleased. That kind of bellicosity is not helpful. But bellicosity seems to be a requirement for the job. Nobody has beat the jingoistic war drum better than Madeleine Albright.

I don't think they are unwilling to admit the world has changed, I'm sure they are acutely aware of the changes. It seemed like only weeks after the fall of The Wall we began hearing statements like "the world is now more dangerous than it's ever been." Maybe some of the conspiracists were right, the Cold War was just a big put up job.

I have not read anything Ms. Rice has written, but in the speech I heard her give, she sounded all the proper neoconservative themes. I'm not a huge fan of the neoconservatives, but they are preferable to the socialist egalitarians in the other party.

It seems in bad taste to say it, but I think Ms. Rice is helpful to Republicans because she is a black woman who is pretty sharp. She would do well in dealing with the media and the public. As for ideas, it's hard to make an assessment from one speech heard quite some time ago. But when it comes to foreign policy, these people all read from the same playbook anyway, so it does come down to personality.
