I'd second that. I've been a Palm user for 2-1/2 years and until recently had virtually never used the IR feature to exchange data. I say until recently because friends have begun purchasing Palm devices also (one a Palm V and the other a Visor Deluxe) and I recently did exchange address book entries and software programs with each of them by beaming.

IMO an imperfect analogy here is eBay: the more users you have, the more you become the medium of choice. I say imperfect because eBay can create critical mass by joining people virtually - they do not need to be near each other physically. However, for the "beaming" feature of Palm to become a standard, the critical mass inflection point can only reached much later because it must be local (ie people must actually have physical access to each other). From my personal perspective this aspect of Palm is only beginning to take on strength (though I hear in some circles it's already a frenzy).

Anyway, IMO it's the massive collection of available software programs and number of developers out there, along with ease of use, that are Palm's greatest asset. A PDA IS NOT a PC, I'd argue that MOST functions you'd perform on either are mutually exclusive. A PDA is a brain assistant and a quick item tracker and retriever. A PC is NOT. A PC is for larger, sit down tasks. Until high capacity PCs are portable, capable of insta-on (not one minute...not 30 seconds...not 5 seconds...INSTA-ON) and instant input and retrieval, the requirements for PDAs will be different.
